You don’t have to build a haven out of wood and nails. Sometimes it’s just a person. Someone whose voice on the other end of the phone makes the noise outside quiet down for a minute.

I’ve had a few of those in my life. People I could show up messy in front of — no polish, no performance — and they’d just pour the coffee and let me sit there. That kind of trust doesn’t happen overnight. It gets built over time, one honest moment after another.

That’s the real thing, I think. Who you are, built up over time, can become somebody’s safe place. And if you’re lucky, they’re yours too.

Go be somebody’s haven today. It costs nothing and it might be the only shelter they get.
